How Rita Saved Christmas
It was a Christmas night of 1950 in Marquis Saskatchewan. But later that night there was a huge blizzard and all the roads were blocked off. The town was also having a toy drive for the orphanage that was just a mile away. The bad thing was that the toy truck had already left before the blizzard had come, and the truck driver didn’t know anything about the blizzard. About a half hour later from when the truck left town the blizzard came. It was so bad that the truck driver couldn’t even see five feet ahead.
The blizzard was getting worse every minute and the wind was getting so power that it made the truck drift into the ditch. The truck driver got out of the truck and tried to get the truck unstuck but he couldn’t. He tried pushing it but he gave up and decided to go walk in the freezing cold and dark to find the nearest for house to get help. He started walking and it was so hard for him to see anything. But after an hour or so of searching, he finally found a big red house in the middle of nowhere. He started to walk towards the house. He walked up the creaky steps and rang the rusty doorbell. About a minute later he could hear someone walking down the stairs from the inside of the house. Then door opened very slowly and standing there was a woman that look like she had just woken up from 24 hours of sleep.
“Hello.” The truck driver said with a smile.
“What do you want?” The strange woman said rudely.
“Umm. I was wondering if I could use your phone.”
“Why do you want to use my phone?”
“Well the toy truc--.”
“I mean I don’t have a phone. But if I did have a phone why would you need to use it.” She interrupted and lied at the same time.
“Well, as I was saying, the toy truck for the orphanage drifted into the side of the road and I need to get to the orphanage before the kids wake up.”
“How do I know if your lying or not?”
“I’m not and I have the truck to prove it, if you want to walk in the dark and the freezing cold for an hour there and back.”
“I’m good. But I am very sorry I can’t help you, I don’t have a phone.” She lied again.
“You mean the phone that’s right behind you on that table.” The truck driver pointed to the phone with a grin on his face.
“Umm… umm… umm… Fine you can use my phone.” She said as she was giving up.
“YES!” Yelled the truck driver with excitement.
Then the truck driver walked into the strange woman’s house, when he did, there was only one thing he saw, it was red. Everything was red, her stairs were red, her coach was red, her floor was red, even her Christmas tree was red. When he walked up to her telephone it was red.
The truck driver picked up the phone and called the telephone operator. The operator’s name was Rita. She is the nicest person you would ever meat. She cares about everyone and she wants everyone in the world to be happy. She especially cares about kids.
“Hello. Who would u like to call?” Rita asked the truck driver.
“Someone who can help a toy truck that drifted into the side of the road in the middle of a snow blizzard. And the toy truck is for the orphanage.
Then Rita started to think and she asked her self “Who can help a stuck toy truck in the middle of a blizzard?”
“I can help.” She said.
“Really? How?” The truck driver asked.
“I have two horses and sleigh I could use. But I need to know where you are.”
“I’m about five miles out of town, and when you see a big red house stop and knock on the door and I’ll answer it.”
“Ok.” Rita said nervously.
Then Rita left the telephone operator station and she ran a half a mile to her house. Once she got there she ran to her backyard to get her two horses. She took the horses the front of her house and attached them to her sleigh. She jumped up onto her sleigh and whipped the horses with the rains and left the house. The horses were running as fast as they could through the freezing cold snow. It was still really dark outside and the blizzard made it even harder for Rita to see. All she could see was the little light coming from her lantern.
It was almost two hours when she finally found the big red house. She parked the horses and the sleigh in front of the house and jumped of and started to walk towards the steps. She walked up the creaky steps hoping she was at the right house. When she got on the top step she, very slowly knocked on the wooden door and she waited for it to open. It was ten seconds later when the door opened and standing there was the truck driver.
“Hi, my name is Rita. Are you the person who asked me to get help for the orphanage’s toy truck?
“Yes I am. And my name is George. It’s nice to meet you.” He said as he put out his hand to shack Rita’s hand.
“So, where is the toy truck?” She asked.
“Well it’s out in the ditch. Come with me and I’ll show you.
So Rita and George left the red house and said “Good bye.” They got into Rita’s sleigh, and started heading to the toy truck. They were freezing, they had looked as blue as a blueberry. Neither of them could feel any part of their body. They were so cold that they had frost bite.
Finally, they had spotted the toy truck. Rita got the horses to stop, and they jumped off and ran over to the truck. It had snowed so much that the truck was pilled up with snow. By this time the sun was starting to raise. They had to hurry because the kids at the orphanage were going to wake up soon. George opened the back of the truck where all the toys were. When Rita went over to look she was amazed by how many toys there were and by how many people donated them. They reached into the truck and they grabbed as many toys as they could at once. Then they ran over to the sleigh and dumped them in the sleigh until there was no more toys in the truck. It was a good thing Rita’s sleigh was big because the toys were pilled up really high.
George and Rita locked up the empty truck and got into the sleigh. They weren’t moving as fast as they were because there was a lot more weight for the horses to pull. The sun kept raising more and more every minute and they were getting more and more rush. But it wasn’t too long when they got to the orphanage, and they got there before the kids woke up.
They knocked on the door with some presents in their hands and a nun answered. She welcomed them in and showed them where to put the gifts, under their Christmas tree. George and Rita ran back and forth putting presents under the tree. When they were done they just waited there for the kids to wake up. Once they did George and Rita were asked to hand out the gifts one by one to the children.
After everyone got their gifts they started to play with the things the got. When George and Rita were leaving all the kids shouted “THANK YOU!!!” When they walked out the doors they had seen that it wasn’t snowing and there was no blizzard. They got onto the sleigh and road it back to town.
2 years later…
George proposed to Rita and they got married and became Mr. and Mrs. Cannon and they were well known in Marquis for saving Christmas for the orphanage. Everyone in the town knows who they are, and who ever meets them always says goods things about them and they say that they are very kind and carrying. Now every year George and Rita are always in charge of having the toy drive for the orphanage on Christmas.
