My Teaching Philosophy
Student Learning
Students are the reason that teachers get out of bed in the morning and they are the focus of life almost every day. Therefore students should be given the best opportunity to learn in an environment that they feel comfortable and safe in. I believe that students should have the opportunity to learn how they do best and should have their learning focus on their learning styles. Also every individual that enters into the classrooms has the right to learn, no matter his or her gender, age, sexual orientation, geographic region, etc. Students use the classroom as a place for growth: socially, emotionally, intellectually and physically. In general, I think that all students should have the right to learn and to be able to learn in their own way. Students should feel safe to share their ideas and opinions in the classroom without having the fear of judgement or teasing.
Teaching
I think that as teachers we must make time for a student if they are struggling with a concept. As a teacher, I strive for a safe classroom environment that all students feel comfortable asking for help whenever necessary. I need to appreciate that everyone has potential and to strive to guide each student to reach success.
The classroom is a place for growth: socially, emotionally, intellectually and physically. Growth is important to teaching because we need to realize that students must be able to learn in a safe environment where they are willing to share and take control of their learning. As a teacher, I believe that it is my job to make sure that everyone’s rights as a student are met in my classroom. To do this I will have to create an environment in which all students feel safe to share their ideas in. This article on Edutopia provides strategies for keeping your classroom a safe, open, and inviting place to learn that I look forward to implementing and trying in my own classroom in the future.
In the Classroom
I think that instruction and learning should allow students to interact with each other to aid in their understanding of the subject area/topic. Using creative ways of teaching will help make learning fun and allow for more excitement and engagement during the lessons. Also, before I begin teaching the class, I want my students to understand that every student has the right to learn and every teacher has the right to teach those who are ready and willing to learn. I also think that preparation is the key to success because as a teacher if I am not prepared, I am failing my students and good preparation allows for room to change and adapt to unexpected events during the day.
In today’s world, technology is a huge part of life. Students are constantly on the internet either on their phones, laptops or tablets. As teachers, we need to use their knowledge of technology to our advantage in the classroom. I have yet to have the opportunity to use different types of technology in my teaching, but I have used some for university classes and for myself as a student. These include Kidblog and Flashcard Machine. I found that as teachers, we can bring in an online classroom through Kidblog a website that allows teachers to set up their students with an account to post assignments, ask questions, interact with their classmates in a safe place and more. Another website that will help with many students in numerous subject areas is Flashcard Machine. This site allows students to create digital flashcards so they will not have to worry about losing them and it can also quiz students to help them study.
